EUROSHIELD
A European Integrated Air & Missile Defense Shield
EUROSHIELD is a proposal for a shared European air and missile defense network designed to protect European citizens, cities and infrastructure from modern aerial threats such as drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. By integrating sensors, command systems and layered interception capabilities, Europe can build a unified shield over its airspace.
1. Why EUROSHIELD
The war in Ukraine demonstrated the scale of modern aerial warfare: mass drone attacks, cruise missiles and ballistic weapons. European defenses remain fragmented across national systems. EUROSHIELD proposes an integrated network that shares detection, command and interception across Europe.
2. Layered Defense Architecture
3. Shared European Air Picture
The core strength of EUROSHIELD is a shared radar and sensor network creating a Recognized Air Picture across Europe. Radar stations, missile defense sensors, and satellite warning systems combine into a real■time operational map of the European sky.
4. Command & Control
A coordinated command system analyzes trajectories, selects interceptors and authorizes launches within seconds. Integrated command prevents duplication and ensures the most efficient use of defensive missiles.
5. Participating and Potential Countries
Initial participants include Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic states. Expansion may include Poland, Italy, Spain and Greece, forming regional defense clusters across Europe.
6. Strategic Partners
Technology and operational cooperation may involve partners such as the United States, Israel, Japan and South Korea, contributing expertise in missile defense systems, sensors and interceptor technologies.
7. European Interceptor Stockpile
A credible shield requires sufficient interceptors. EUROSHIELD therefore supports a shared European interceptor reserve, joint procurement programs, coordinated production and shared logistics.
8. Strategic Impact
A fully implemented EUROSHIELD would provide Europe with integrated continental air defense, greater strategic autonomy and improved protection of citizens and infrastructure against modern missile threats.
Layer | Primary Threat | Example System | Typical Role |
|---|---|---|---|
Short Range | Drones / Aircraft | IRIS-T SLM | Local Air Defense |
Medium Range | Cruise Missiles | Patriot | Regional Protection |
Long Range | Ballistic Missiles | Arrow-3 | Strategic Interception |
